The task involved removing a weld that secured the exchanger diaphragm, allowing access to the tube bundle for routine maintenance. However, due to the diaphragm’s location and the exchanger’s support configuration, neither standard ID nor OD-mounted flange facers could be used. Traditional flange machines simply didn’t fit and posed a high risk of damaging the exchanger’s studs and threads, a risk the RectiEquipos team wasn’t willing to take.
The Solution: Turning the FF6300 Upside Down
Faced with this unique challenge, the RectiEquipos team fully leveraged the versatility of the CLIMAX FF6300 flange facer. Rather than relying on a conventional setup, they engineered a completely inverted configuration, using custom-designed adaptors to securely mount the machine to the exchanger studs.
This inventive approach allowed the flange machine to hang vertically from an internal mount. Hoses were carefully routed to avoid the rotating arm, ensuring smooth operation and eliminating the risk of interference or damage. The result was a clean and precise flange facing operation that successfully removed the diaphragm weld without compromising the exchanger’s structural integrity.
