27 Янв HOW TO: BORING PRECISELY ALIGNED HOLES
Maximizing alignment and precision can be very difficult when boring holes that are far apart. You could use an extra-long boring bar, but you would need to compensate for deflection (sag) over the unsupported span. The greater the span, the more sag in the bar. Other ad hoc solutions like piano wire or inclinometers have their own idiosyncrasies and challenges.
To precisely align bearings over long distances – as much as 50 feet (15.2 meters) – the best alternative is an optical alignment tool. That’s why CLIMAX partnered with Brunson Instrument Company to develop a tool designed to align bearings on the CLIMAX BB5000 Line Boring Machine.
The Brunson system is highly portable; a single worker can deploy it. Set-up is accurate and easy, even in rough field conditions, so you can overcome the common field boring problems associated with today’s large equipment.
How does it work? The tool is a straightforward design composed of an alignment scope, an alignment fixture, and two or more wire targets. The setup is relatively simple. First, the alignment fixture is mounted into the BB5000 bearing. Next, the alignment scope is placed in the fixture and secured with a safety strap. The wire targets have been designed with a 2.25 inch (57.2 mm) outside diameter – the same size as a standard boring bar on the BB5000 Line Boring Machine.
Once the scope and wire targets are in place, four precision adjustment screws on the fixture fine-tune the alignment. This easy set-up saves time on the job and increases the accuracy with which the job is completed.
