A ball mill is an essential piece of equipment in industries such as mining, cement, ceramics, and chemical processing. It is used to grind materials into fine powders or particles through a process of impact and attrition. The mill consists of a rotating cylindrical drum filled with grinding media (steel or ceramic balls) and the material to be ground.

2024 Picture of the Year Finalist – 01

Congratulations to Cam Allary, Steven Stefura, and Jack Berger from TOMCO Group of Companies for using a CLIMAX CM6000 Circular Mill and an LM6200 Gantry Linear Mill to repair a Caterpillar 7495 Carbody back to spec. These machines are being used to mill the side frame and shear ledge surfaces as well as the swing gear mounting surface. The CM6000 milled out to 190” diameter on the swing gear, and the LM6200 utilized 16 feet of horizontal travel and utilized a 106” ram for vertical travel.

Congratulations to Matt Koss from HAMM Equipment in Casper, Wyoming, for using 8 Line Boring setups to rebuild the entire hoist case of a Bucyrus 2570 Hoist Case. They utilized 8”, 5”, 3.5”, and 2.25” boring bars, with each of the four cases requiring three line boring setups. The drum bores were re-machined using the CLIMAX BB8100, and all bars were precisely aligned using HAMM’s optical equipment to ensure proper alignment.

Congratulations to Martin Bachmann Keller EIRL in Lima, Peru for their exceptional work using a CLIMAX FF8200 Flange Facing Machine for a Francis Hydroelectric Turbine Flange Repair. The Francis turbine, a reaction turbine, operates on principles of both impulse and reaction forces, converting water pressure and flow into mechanical energy to generate electricity. This project highlights the precision and expertise required for such critical repairs.

Congratulations to Edwin Jurado from RectiEquipos in Bogotá, Colombia for showcasing an innovative CLIMAX FF6300 setup on an exchanger head in an inverted position. Using custom adaptors, the machine was securely mounted to the exchanger studs, allowing it to hang from the ID mount with hoses strategically positioned to stay clear of the rotating arm—effectively preventing damage to the exchanger studs and threads.

Congratulations to Ingmar Thut from T & T In Situ Machining in Norderstedt, Germany for showcasing a CLIMAX CM6200 Circular Mill in action. During maintenance on a mobile harbor crane in Egypt, T&T expertly machined the landing surface of the slewing ring after laser checks revealed surface deviations caused by years of operation. The result was a machined surface of approximately 4500 mm (177”).

Congratulations to Beano Stearns and the team at B.O.S. Field Machine in Houghton Lake, Michigan, for their exceptional work using a CLIMAX BB8100 Line Boring System to repair a massive 4,000-ton Ajax forging press. This press, located in Chicago, required repairs on both crank bores. The team utilized three support brackets to successfully complete the job, achieving an impressive 44-inch bore size.

Congratulations to Steve Weldon, J. Aldridge, and the team at Atlas Machine & Supply in Louisville, Kentucky! Using the CLIMAX LM6200, they expertly machined a 7’ x 7’ automotive cast iron platen that had been repaired with nickel weld. This challenging project required maintaining a tight tolerance, as exceeding zero would compromise the closing gap. By welding and milling the platen back to spec onsite, the team avoided the weeks-long process of disassembly and shipping to a shop, completing the job in less than a week.

The P&H 4100XPC is a massive electric rope shovel widely used in surface mining operations to move substantial amounts of overburden, ore, or other materials. With a bucket capacity of 100 tons or more, this heavy-duty machine is essential for mining operations involving coal, copper, gold, and iron ore. Its reliability is crucial to maintaining productivity in the mining industry.

Congratulations to Franks Mobile Machining from Franks Mobile Machining in Woodville, Texas, for successfully using a CLIMAX LM6200 linear/gantry mill to mill the platform of a massive 12K forging hammer! This hammer is primarily used to forge large, custom-shaped components for ships and turbines.

Congratulations to Rodrigo Veliz, Diego Recart, Carlos Munoz, Gonzalo Diaz, and the AXIUM team in Santiago, Chile! The team successfully used a CLIMAX PL2000 to repair a shaft for an induced draft fan system at the Guacolda thermoelectric plant in Atacama, Chile. To overcome the challenge of machining the shaft beyond the standard capabilities of the PL2000, the Axium team engineered an innovative extension arm with a rotational anti-vibration support. This custom solution extended the range and enabled precise machining of the shaft.

Congratulations to Kripalisinh Parmar and Advanced Bolting Solutions Pvt. from Navi Mumbai, India, for using the CLIMAX FF6300 Flange Facer, FF1200 OD Mount Flange Facer and the H&S TOOL ODF70 SPEED FACER™ for flange facing, serration, tube sheet facing, tube sheet back facing, and tube sheet front end facing—three machines on tube sheet bundle housing.

2023 Picture of the Year Finalist – 02

Congratulations to Rick Jones and Destec Engineering Ltd. from Lincoln, United Kingdom, for using a CLIMAX FF5300 Flange Facer and H&S TOOL AFC CLAMSHELL machine for onsite machining work on this pressure vessel located in a European chemical plant. The work involved roughing out a 200mm long reducing angle using a clamshell pipe cutter (before grinding finish), Turning the outside diameter 100mm long to match the new pipework diameter, and forming a weld prep on the end of the spigot using a bore mounted flange facing machine. Both machines were used simultaneously to reduce the time to complete the work.

Scott had to navigate two different-sized flanges, so he accommodated by doing the work with two (2) machines and allowing his techs to run both together remotely.

Congratulations to James Wheatley and Atlas Machine & Supply out of Tennessee, USA, for using the CLIMAX PL4000 portable lathe. James Wheatley took this pic of a PL4000 in a Cement Plant in Central TN. A ball mill had suffered severe damage to the bearing journals. The journal had to be welded and machined in line with each other over 30′ apart. “The PL4000 is one of the best machines CLIMAX has available.”

Congratulations to Daniel Vukajlovic and Cross Canada Millwright from Leduc, Alberta, Canada. The CLIMAX LM6200 linear/gantry milling machine is mounted/static while the large part rotates. This was an R&D project. Machining is done under the part while the machine is not moving and the 14 m (45.93 ft.) diameter part is rotating.

Congratulations to Steve Levasseur and Soucy Industriel of Quebec, Canada, for using the CLIMAX CM6200 Circular Mill to remachine the bearing face on this mining shovel carbody repair project. With a custom and creative mounting fixture, they achieved flatness and surface qualities to impress their customer.

2023 Picture of the Year Finalist – 11

Congratulations to Blake Westling and Peninsula Iron Works out of Portland, Oregon, USA. Toggle Beam for a shuttle lift with severe journal damage. The part was too large to have the journals turned locally, so PIW had to get creative. Using an H&S TOOL AFC24 Clamshell, they built custom tooling and figured out a way to get a consistent feed rate for proper tool engagement to turn these journals accurate within .003”. The job was completed within the required tolerance and customer satisfaction.

Congratulations to Tyson Morrie and Advanced Portable Machining, based in Calmar, Alberta, Canada. 192″ support ring inside of vessel 5′ down. The ring was overlayed with stainless steel and needed to be machined down to specification. Foot supports were built as the CLIMAX CM6200 circular mill was past the max clamping distance. Each cut took 1 hour to complete. 3 rings to complete, 18-day job.

The CLIMAX LM6000 liner/gantry mill was the perfect machine to repair the badly damaged seat areas that had been welded. The work is being performed 40′ above the ground in a rough and extreme environment.

The contractor, Punj Lloyd Group, was awarded the welding project for welding hundreds of 16” and 24” pipe, and they used the Magnatech T-Head Model System with Pipemaster 516 Controllers.

The challenge was machining in a confined space 6m deep within the hull.

Congratulations to Martin Bachmann and Martin Bachmann Keller EIRL from Lima, Peru, for taking advantage of the CLIMAX FF6300 Flange Facer, a custom tool holder, and utilizing a large measuring micrometer (43”) to machine repair a stuffing box belonging to a gas turbine. Because it has two welded legs underneath, it can’t be put on a horizontal lathe. Machining the edges reshaped the oval fixture back into its original cylindrical shape.

Congratulations to Ingmar Thut and T&T In Situ Machining Group from Norderstedt, Germany, using the CLIMAX CM6200 Circular Mill to successfully re-machine the inner and outer flange of this buoy to achieve the flatness needed. Creatively, T&T flipped the setup by welding poles to the buoy to allow for additional surface, using only four legs to clamp and align. The flatness and surface qualities came out perfectly!

Martin’s team modified anchoring bolts and a base plate, and within a couple of hours, they successfully achieved the requested surface finish of 125 RMS.

Congratulations to Jason Harris and Blue Ridge Industrial out of Gillette, Wyoming, for this great application featuring the CLIMAX CM6200 Circular Mill. Blue Ridge Industrial fabricated special mounts to use the CM6200 to mill the upper and lower rail pads on a Caterpillar 7495 Shovel in Robinson, Nevada. The alignment had to be concentric and perpendicular to the center pin bore. BRI used a FARO laser tracker to shoot the mill into the tight tolerances. Excellent work!

Congratulations to Jay Titley from In-Situ Machining Solutions in Alberta, Canada, for using a CLIMAX PM6000 to machine two badly leaking flanges. The flanges were roughly .250” out of flat before machining repairs. In-Situ was able to machine the flanges to spec at .010” flat from end to end. After machining the flanges, they were sealed up with no issues or leaks!

Congratulations to Will Gillard and JJ Bullen, Plant & Equipment from Ormskirk, UK, using two CLIMAX BB5000 Line Boring Machines. The top setup is a conventional 1 ¾” bar, two bearings, drive, and feed mounted outside the bores. The bottom setup is a 2 ¼” bar, four bearings, drive, and feed mounted between the bores, showcasing great versatility with these two setups.

2021 Picture of the Year Finalist – 18

Congratulations to Ray Brazier, Joel Hender, and Metalock Engineering UK out of Coventry, Warwickshire, UK, using a CLIMAX BB3000 in a dockyard to repair the bores on a damaged Becker rudder that had run aground and bent. To preserve wall thickness on the most damaged bores, Metalock was able to offset the centerline and bore to a smaller diameter than the original clean-up would require. After the installation of bushes, they were able to set the original policeman marks and bore to the correct centerline and return the tolerances to the factory standard.

Our fifth picture of the year finalist is from In-Situ Machining, based in Alberta, Canada, using their 13-year-old CLIMAX FF8000 Flange Facer to machine a 108” diameter flange face on a 27-degree angle on top of a catalyst converter. In-Situ was able to achieve an 80 RMS surface finish with a single-point tool to ensure a proper seal for the 75,000-pound lid. 2020 Picture of the Year Finalist – 07

Our seventh finalist was captured by Ward Vessel & Exchanger based in North Carolina, USA, using an H&S TOOL AFC 66” Clamshell to complete an internal weld overlay repair. To accomplish this, Ward used the H&S Clamshell to cut off the lower section to have full access to the overlay. They used compound angle tooling to tackle the 60” diameter and 3” thick carbon steel material with a compound 37-10 bevel, ensuring a much nicer weld prep after the overlay was complete. Thank you to Jon Ward and Chris Grice for allowing us to support Ward’s Field Service Group with locations in Charlotte and Houston, Texas!

Our ninth finalist is courtesy of Field Mining Services Group, Queensland, Australia, for showcasing the CLIMAX CM6200 Circular Mill as they repair the slew bearing for this Terex RH400, or known now as a Caterpillar 6090. The Caterpillar 6090 has the largest slew bearing mounting diameter, but the Field Mining Services Group team tackled the project with ease. Our tenth finalist is from Martin Bachmann Keller EIRL based in Lima, Peru, using a modified CLIMAX KM3000 Key Mill to mill a notch on a gas turbine shaft. When the site was told the job couldn’t be completed immediately and it would take 20 weeks, MBK and the team were able to adapt their KM3000 and complete the notch in 2 hours. According to Martin ‘This example shows the versatility of CLIMAX machines. Our thirteenth finalist comes from Kris Adamson and Destec Engineering Ltd in the UK, using two H&S TOOL Clamshells to cut out a pipe at a hydroelectric power station. Destec was able to conduct the work in short order, getting their customer up and running in a few days. Our fourteenth finalist is thanks to TOMCO Group of Companies, based in Edmonton, Alberta, for showcasing how they refurbished a CAT 7495 HF electric rope shovel with a CLIMAX LM6200 Gantry Mill. TOMCO is shown here milling the side frame mounting pads and shear ledge back into spec after wear in the oilsands mine in northern Alberta. The CLIMAX LM6200 is 192” long and was able to machine the pads back into spec within 0.005” pad to pad in one setup. Our twentieth and final finalist is thanks to Edwin Jurado from Rectiequipos SAS in Bogota, Colombia, showcasing the use of a CLIMAX CM6200 Circular Mill being used to machine the upper slew ring seat surface on a Komatsu mining shovel. No welding was allowed to secure the machine in place, so a custom fixture was designed to help set up the circular mill using the shovel’s central pin itself, greatly reducing the setup time. MTT utilized a #CLIMAX FF8200 on a 112” OD x 2” thick Stainless Steel on this 125’ long tower, cut in half for transport. They put a 30-degree inside and 30-degree outside bevel on each side so the two halves could be welded back together, from both the inside and outside, on location.
